Groundwater Environmental Impact Prediction: The Example of Thermal Power Plant

With the rapid development of industry and the increasing population, the balance of groundwater resources has been seriously damaged in China. Quantitative prediction and assessment of the groundwater environment have become necessary for the rational development, use and protection of groundwater resources. Taking the thermal power plant as an example, based on the engineering characteristics and possible pollution of the proposed construction project, the mathematical model of groundwater pollutant migration is established, and the groundwater pollution is predicted by an analytical method. COD, ammonia nitrogen and diesel fuel were selected as predictors to predict the pollutant migration after 100, and 1000 days of pollution occurrence, respectively. The results show that the pollution range will gradually expand with time. After 1000 days, the migration distance of pollutants such as COD and NH3-N reaches 80m, and the influence distance of pollutants such as diesel oil will gradually weaken with time. If not controlled and managed in time, the leakage of pollutants can cause serious pollution to groundwater during the operation of the electric field.

Multivariate and spatio-temporal groundwater pollution risk assessment: A new long-time serial groundwater environmental impact assessment system

Groundwater pollution risk assessment is an important part of environmental assessment. Although it has been developed for many years, there has not yet been a multi-dimensional method that takes into account long time series and spatial factors. We proposed a new method combines the advantages of remote sensing cloud computing, long-term groundwater modeling simulation and GIS technology to solve it efficiently. A coastal industrial park in Hainan was used as the study area. The depth of groundwater level, rainfall, topography and geomorphology, soil moisture, pollution source, pollution toxicity and other more than 10 parameters were used as the indexes. A comprehensive model with remote sensing cloud computing, DRASTIC model and Modflow + MT3DMS was established to assess the pollution risk from 2014 to 2021. The multi-year results indicated that the risk assessment of groundwater pollution was usually on the vertical coastal direction, and the risk increased from far away to near coast. With the discharge of pollutants in the industrial park, the pollution risk in the area 5 km away from the centre increased year by year until it became stable in 2019, and the risk in the centre of the park reached 1 level, covered an area of up to 145400 square metres, accounted for 0.012% of the whole study area. The assessment results in 2020 and 2021 fluctuate slightly compared with those in 2019. Therefore, in terms of groundwater resource protection and resource management, it is necessary to focus on the detection of pollution in the coastal zone and the pollution within 5 km of the centre to strictly control pollution discharge. In this study, the comprehensive assessment includes surface indicators, subsurface indicators, and pollutant indicators. Finally, we achieve a multivariate, spatial and long time series groundwater pollution risk assessment system, which is a new groundwater environmental impact assessment (GEIA) system.

Modelling Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Migration in Heterogeneous Fractured Media at a Municipal Solid Waste Landfill in Nanjing Lishui, China

The migration of groundwater flow and contaminants in fractured medium is complicated owing to the strong heterogeneity and anisotropy of fractured rock mass. Taking the environmental restoration and groundwater protection of the Lishui domestic waste landfill in Nanjing as the background, the groundwater environmental impact assessment and prediction are conducted for the groundwater environmental pollution that may be caused by the leakage of the landfill leachate after the closure of the domestic waste landfill. The strata of the landfill site are clay-cobble gravel, strongly and moderately weathered breccia, with obvious anisotropy and significant differences in rock mass permeability. A 3D numerical model of groundwater flow and contaminant migration in the landfill area is established by integrating the hydrogeological field tests and a conceptual model in the study area. Based on the parametric inversion method, the heterogeneous anisotropic permeability coefficient of the fractured medium is calibrated, and the temporal and spatial migration characteristics of contaminants such as ammonia nitrogen and mercury are predicted using the corrected model under the normal and failure conditions of the antiseepage curtain. The calculated results show that when the antiseepage fails, the maximum migration distances of contaminants in the horizontal direction after 100 days in the old and new landfills are 7.66 m and 15.64 m, respectively, and the maximum migration distances after 20 years are 192.5 m and 113.89 m, respectively. The migration direction and distances of contaminants are consistent with the hydrogeological conditions of the study area. The model calculation results provide a corresponding basis for the antiseepage control of contaminants.

Analysis of Groundwater Environment Evaluation and Prediction

In accordance with the requirements of Technical guidelines for environmental impact assessment―groundwater environment (HJ 610-2016), the process of groundwater environmental impact assessment and prediction was analyzed. Groundwater Model System (GMS) was used to simulate Groundwater flow field and solute transport, the following main conclusions were draw. As long as the project conforms to the specifications and design and the management is in place during operation, the production area and tailings area in normal working conditions will not cause obvious adverse effects on the quality of groundwater. Under different assumptions, groundwater pollution of the production area and tailings area in abnormal conditions will not directly affect the drinking water, farmland irrigation water and surface water of surrounding residents.

Therefore, the prediction and evaluation of groundwater environmental impact is studied based on numerical simulation model. The design and implementation of the software part of the float system are explained, mainly around the function of the upper software monitoring system. This system realizes the real-time control of water environment information and the evaluation of water eutrophication in the later stage, as well as the function of water bloom warning and prediction. Then, the optimized hierarchical analysis algorithm is emphasized, which provides an effective decision-making platform for the prevention and control of water bloom. With the addition of the cloud-based network camera, the buoy can monitor the water surface 24 hours in real time, and support video playback, mobile phone watching the water surface image and other functions. The study provides a reference for the evaluation of groundwater environment and the wide application of mathematical models.

Groundwater environmental impact and supervise recommendation in process of shale gas development in China

There are rich shale gas resources in China at present, which are going to be exploited and utilized in a large scale. However, of a series of environmental issues caused by the development and utilization of the resources, the influence on the groundwater environment is the most important. Shale gas development in China is in an initial stage. The new guidelines for environmental impact assessment on shale gas development are still not issued while traditional environmental impact assessment on oil and gas field development could not meet the need of environmental management for shale gas development and construction projects. In this paper, based on the current situation of shale gas development in China region, the influences of shale gas development in different stages on the groundwater environment are analyzed. The ideas and key points in assessing the influences of shale gas development on the groundwater’s environmental quality in different stages are proposed when the technical guidelines for the environmental impact assessment on shale gas development are not available. The result of the paper will provide a new idea for the Groundwater environmental impact and Supervise Recommendation in shale gas development in China.

Prediction of groundwater environmental impact on a power plant under accident conditions

According to the engineering features of the proposed power plant and the possible pollution accidents, the accident conditions of two kinds of polluted groundwater, such as the light diesel oil tank bottom leakage and the power plant pond bottom leakage are set up. Using the two-dimensional hydrodynamic dispersion equation of the continuous injection and instantaneous injection, the groundwater pollution in the accident condition is predicted and evaluated. The results show that, with the passage of time, the migration range of groundwater pollutants caused by sewage leakage from industrial wastewater buffer tank shows a trend of gradual expansion; however, the maximum value of pollutant concentration exceeding standard is gradually decreasing. After 10 years, the excessive pollutant migration distance has reached 390 m. If no remedial measures are taken in time, during the operation of the power plant, industrial wastewater pool sewage leakage will cause long-term pollution to the groundwater. Similarly, if the accident was diesel tank explosion, the range of diesel contamination to groundwater is also increasing over time, but the concentration of pollutants is gradually decreasing. About 25 years later, the pollutant concentration within 400 m downstream of pollution source has decreased to 0.04 mg/L, and the impact of diesel oil leakage on groundwater has largely disappeared.

Assessment of Groundwater Pollution and its Causes in the Plain Area of Yili River Valley

This paper, adapting the method of Average Comprehensive Pollution Index and Nemero Pollution Index, aims to evaluate the groundwater pollution of the plain area of Yili river valley in Xinjiang uygur autonomous region. And the cause of the pollution was discussed as well. The results showed that: First, the main influencing factors are total hardness, sulfate, as well as three nitrogen. Second, the main reasons for the groundwater pollution are industrial and mining enterprises which present star-like in this area. What’s more, the domestic sewage with zonal distribution and the planar distribution of agricultural waste water are also included. This study is of great importance to the analysis and prediction of groundwater environmental impact. Located in the northwest of Xinjiang uygur autonomous region, with its most humid climate, the most abundant precipitation as well as the richest soil and coverage of vegetation within the area of Xinjiang and Tianshan, the Yili river valley has been hailed as the “wet island” and “treasure of biological resources” of the semi arid region [1]. Yili river valley is rich in water resources. And main river that it flows through is the Yili River, an international river that runs across China and Kazakhstan, the total length of which is 1236.5 km, with its length at home 442km[2]. The present researches on the Yili river valley is relatively poor, with the materials relating to the water environment not so rich [3-8]. With the influence of human activities, the flow field, water quality and hydro-chemical characteristics of groundwater in this area have been changed accordingly. The evaluation of contaminated situation of groundwater in this area can provide a sound scientific basis for the rational utilization of water resources in this region. Meanwhile, it works as a solid guide for the sustainable development and integrated management of water resources within this region [9].

The Numerical Simulation Research on the Groundwater Environmental Impact of Coal Mining in Complex Boundary Conditions

The article takes Shanxi Lu’an Group Yuxin Coal Mines as an example, establishing a model to simulate the impact of groundwater processes in different time periods Yuxin mining process through MODFLOW software. And evaluates the predictive region groundwater level and groundwater environment changing trends run of mine production.Model fit with satisfactory results. Due to there's watershed area in groundwater exploitation and the groundwater flow along the limestone layer excretion which is in the valley around, the groundwater has three flow directions in the Mining area and the flow field is very complex.Obviously,it is more difficult to understand the mining impact on groundwater exploit ation process. The article combines theoretical study with practical investigation. According to the simulation results of Yuxin Coal Mines, showing more clearly the impact of coal mining under complex boundary conditions on groundwater. Provide for the study of the impact of post-mining groundwater reference, while providing the basis for the supervision and management of local government departments and post Yuxin coal mining operation, and also provide a favorable basis for the protection of drinking water for local residents.

Ground Water Contamination of the Coal Gangue Leachate of Sandy Base Field in Erdos - On the Case of the Coal Waste Field of Daliu Tower Mine Area

Based on the hydro-geological survey, sampling analysis and combined with ground water flow systems theory, the work studied coal gangue leachate of a typical sandy base coal waste field in Erdos on ground water environmental impact. The results showed that pile of coal waste change the original characteristics of ground water flow systems, coal waste field from ground water discharge areas change into the runoff area, the bottom of Gangue heap immersion in ground water long term, the toxic and hazardous substances released and spread to the downstream by ground water runoff. Chromium, arsenic, fluoride, sulfateradical, copper, zinc, nickel, manganese and other pollution factors in the downstream ground water of gangue field and surface outlet is much higher than background value, where concentration of arsenic and NO3–N is 1.013mg / l and 31.2 mg / l, respectively higher than the background value which is 148 and 3 times.

The Apply of Anisotropy Equivalent Flow Model in Research of Tunnel Drainage Influence Radius

Tunnel drainage influence range is a difficult hydrological problem. It relates directly to tunnel groundwater environment influence degree in construction and operation stages. Based on Shibanshan tunnel in Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan passenger line, this paper analyses influencing factor of tunnel drainage influence radius and flow transient process adopting heterogeneity and anisotropy equivalent flow models. This paper studies the tunnel drainage influence radius and construction progress , hydrology factors, geological factors and rainfall infiltration factors relations. Research results show that the influence factors are rock permeability, rainfall infiltration recharge and aquifer thickness on tunnel top, less influence factors are structure surface direction, anisotropy characteristic coefficient and primary support of the closed time. The conclusions will provide technical supports for evaluating the tunnel construction of groundwater environmental impact.
